MEETING ()!<' WOKKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee mot on Thursday evening, Olio Mayor piesidCorrespondence was read. it was resolved :—That unless Messrs Weston and Thomson also give right of way to the land offered as a bathing site at Te llenui the building will be erected on the original site. Mr Chew (.'hong's application for a f|u/>:lp)UJi in ,l!uller)street was/ referred to the 'Eii(t'Mieer. It was resohc.i, " That this Committee recommend that the Council should proceed at onco with the main drain along Pevon Street from the railway crossing to Liardet Street, also from Devon Street along James Street to the septic tank and make any branch connections that may be thought to lie necessary from the main drain to the outer boundary of the street, but that such branch connections shall not 1)0 public drains ; that any owner be allowed to connect with a, jbiranch d {am upon payment of £ (actual average cost) ; that as many owners as possible fronting the proposed drain be induced to agree with the Borough Council to pay for the costs of the branch connections and that notices be served on all those who do not sign the agreement to' connect direct with the main drain and they be informed that without payment they will not be allowed to use the braneh connections ; that a circular letter be written to all the owners frontiing the proposed drain showing that they will save themselves considerable expense by agreeing to the Council's proposals, and also enable the drainage system to be more expediently brought into working order ; that the Town Clerk at orice prepare a list of the owners oflamd fronting the proposed drain and the Boroujgjh solicitoi' bfc instructed to prepare agreements between such owners and the Borough cil."A deputation from the Swimmiingi Club submitted a proposed programme for the opening of the Haths on Dec. 3.—Approved, and the Committee will confer with the Club re extra seating accommodation.
Mr Montcfiore, sub-contractor on the Esplanade, waited on the Committee. He had finished his work weeks ago, but the main contract was not complete. He asked when his wages-would be forthcoming.
After discussion., it wag decided that the Engineer instruct Mr Armstrong, the contractor, that unless the work is complete within seven days the Council will take over the contract and finish the work. The Mayor and Crs. Carter and Belliinger were appointed to wait on the Harbour Board to-day (Friday) to obtain permission to construct a portion of the septic tank onGill Street Extension.
The question of holidays for the permanent staff was further referred to the re-organising committee. Mr Mestayer wrote re electric light and drainage and sewrage schemes. It was decided in answer to a petition from residents in Dawson, Vivian and Powderham Streets to do kerbing on footpaths when funds permit.
The Engineer will report on cost of proposed King-street bridge over the Mang-aotuku. Tho Mayor undertook to sec Mr Breach, of Molesworth Street, re his complaint of the storm-water from streets damaging his property. The Engineer reported that the Council's men would be employed during the next fortnight on : Widening Standish Hill Road, if fine ; crushing and spreading metal in Lemon Street ; unloading and stacking earthenware pipes for drainage; general repairs and backing concrete kerbing in Vivian and Dawson Streets.
Mr Govett will be informed that tho Council does not intend to purchase the sections offered on the cornerof Carrington Road and Courtney street, Tho Committee adjourned.
