Gravel Pit Fatality.

Shortly before two o'clock yesterday word was recoi ved in town that an accident had occurred at Phem» Hill, Hurford Road. A mounted messenger galloped into New Plymouth for medical assistance and Dr. Homo set out for the scene of the accident at a few minutes after two o'clock.

We learn that about half a dozen men were working in the pit, unci a bullock-dray had just backed in to load. About six yards of stuff suddenly lK'cuiiie detached aTid fell, coveringl two men, James Rogers and Alfred King. The men were dug out and it was found that the force of the earth which carno from a face of about 18 feet high had proved too much for Kogters, and life was found to be extinct, aiul his body was removed to his brother's residence on the Hurfoi-d Road. King Buttered a fracture of the leg below the knee and was brought in to the hospital. Another man, whose name we are unable to obtain, also received a severe shaking, but was able to ride into town. The force of the fall was such as to bieak the support of the dra.v-pole. Hr. Home certainly lost no time in leaving for the scene of the fatality, and his promptness is to be commended.
