Sheep for South Africa.
Referring to the shipment of live sheep from Wellington to South Africa, the Band Daily Mail is of opinion that "the important bearingl that these shipments have upon pastoral pursuits in New Zealand cannot well be over-estimated, for the quality of sheep needed for South Africa is the lean kind that has been tabooed for the London market. Previous to this, trade being -develoijed sheep of lean quality had to be utilised by boiling down, which gave a far less profitable return to the grazier and the colony than that now received. The trade in frown mutton between New Zealand and South Africa is also steadily on the increase, and there lias lately been a demand for our frozen mutton that bears testimony to the favour in which it is held in South Africa. Competition with New Zealand on the part of South America, however, though less acute than it was, still remains very keen. A contract for the supply of New Zealand mutton to a prominent South African contractor was lately lost' because of the inability of a leading firm in this colony to abate l-16th contra, matter for congratulation of Id from a quotation. It is, per that the New Zealand sheep farmers have proved their ability to compete in a measure with the one country which, by reason of natural circumstances, is specially favoured.
