Fatality at the Rifle Butts.
BLENHEIM, Nov. 11. There was an accident at Vernon Butts this afternoon, Tom Batty, a well-known resident, losing his life. Together with his son and brother he was engaged as marker, and had charge of the centre of three targets, at which a squad of recruits were firing at a rapid rate from the 200 yards range. The shooting had not long commenced when one of the markers rushed front the trench with the danger flag, crying out, " You'vo shot Batty." He was found in an unconscious state, with a bullet wound in the head, and died in 20 minutes. Tiro bullet struck the, mound about six inches from the top and glanced down, passing through the brain from the rear centre to the loft side. Deceased was about 45 years and had a colonial reputation as a marker, having attended the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting as marker Xor years.
