The Licensing Bill.
JTHB PREMIER'S INTENTIONS. WELLINGTON, Nov. 11. In the House yesterday the Premier, speaking of the Licensing Bill, said the majority of the House must decide as to whether the no license no liquor clause should be retained. The temperance party had advocated that principle in dealing with the King Country and he iiad concluded that what was good lor the district Would be good for the whole colony. He would not i;ress clause 10, submitting to a referendum the question of holding the polls every three or every six years. He lad come to the conclusion that it would not bo ft democratic or logical proposal, neither would he press clause 14 Which proposed to alter the constitution of licensing, committees. On clause 33 proposing to extend the license of rjjrem'.sw ra which £3OOO had been expended since Juno last to six years Mr Seddon said hj» was prepared to amend this in the dirction of limiting the pt-wvr of the committee to order additions and Improvements to not nu-ro than £3OOO. Touching clauses 35, 36. and 87. dealing with liquor in the King Country, the (loveriiment was prepared to abandon ihe idea of appointing a Commission of Fnijuiry. Ho was prepared to eliminate these clauses to bring the King iVuntiy under clause 33 of i'-.e existing Act until something elsi** was done. In conclusion Mr Seddon said there was still an .xcclbnl I.iil to be passed. At the evening sitting of the Bouse a motion to make the committal of the Licensing Act Amendment Bill, the second order of the day, was challenged and a division called for with the result that the committal iw»s refused by 38 votes to 34. McLachlan, McNab, Moss, Rcid, Remington, Rhodes, Sidey, Symes, Tanner, Taylor, Thomson, J. C. Thomson, J, W. Vile and WilHs. No pairs were recorded.
