The Northern Monarch, coal laden from Newcastle to Callao. which went ashore at 6.30 on Saturday morning ut Oaonui, five miles on the New Plymouth side of Opunake, was an iron liarque of 1148 tons net. She was built at Dumbarton in 1875 for Messrs .1. Eager and Co., of Liverpool. 'lhe vessel was under the command of Captain Nixon, with a crew of 24. all of whom were saved.
