The special train Trom New Plymouth took a fair number of passengers, and when these arrived at the course there was still a chance of the day proving fine. Koseal took charge and came down the straight with Achilles next. Passing the stand Wairiki and Strathavon were running third and fourth. Then followed Shrapnel, Canteen, Lavalette, Heroism, with Ringman and Dombardo last. Passing Cutts's tho order of the leaders was unchanged. Koseal and Achilles raced together in front along the back. At the six-furlongs post their immediate attendants were General Symons, Wairiki and Canteen in that order. At the half-n..le Koseal had had enough, and dropped out of tho contesy. Wairiki joined Achilles at tho lop oi the straight. Tho latter, on The rails, ]got slightly interfered with, and was pulled on the outside of Wairiki. Canteen, who had bean improving his position from the half-mile post, came up on the outside ut'the distance, ank after sin exciting finish, won by half a length from Wairiki. Achilles was two lenglths away, half a length clear of Strathavon, Hinetaura was lifth, General Symons and Shrapnel next. Then followed Kingman, Lavalette, Koseal, Heroism, Bombardo, with Mars last. Achilles met with some interference at the distance, and the matter was investigated by the Stewards, with the result that McCombe, the rider of Canteen, was disqualified for two years.
