•> —- THE HALFrHOLIJ>A.Y. COMPULSORY CLAUSE STBUCIC OUT. The Lalwur Bills Committee naw reported on the Shops end Offlcee Bill, recommending that It be allowed to proceed with certain amendments. The first amendments strikes out the compulsory Saturday half-holiday, ond the various districts are give* power to tlocfcda what afternoon in the week shall be the statutory half-holiday. Provision is made for taking a plobiaeit* on the question of a universal halfholiday on the day of the next election, the issue being decided by a, majority of votes cast. The result of the poll shall have effect from lafr of January after the taking of tfca poll, and shall continue for six years. In tlio definitions "excepted sltopkeepera" are those who may remain open on the half-holiday, vis., fishmongers, fruiters and confectioners ; words."if of New Zealand or Ehroi>ean are struck out. In addition to butchers, hairdressers and photographers, tobacconists are permitted to close Ot* some other afternoon than Saturday in the event of that day being appointed us tlie statutory half-holi-day. Another alteration provides that no female assistant other than the wife or daughter of the occupier shall be employed in an hotel bar between the hours of 7 p.m. and ft a.m.
