TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Everyone who recognises what an important factor the improvement of the harbour is to the future welfare and prosperity of Taranaki, will agree that Mr J5. M. Smith is deserving of the greatest praise for bis action in connection with the Harbour Empowering Bill. He has certainly saved the situation at a critical time, and I hope some steps will be taken to recognise his success. The opponents of the Bill are said to be going to present Mr Maxwell with a purse of 500 sovereigns for his efforts to kill the Bill. I would suggest that Mr Smith should be publicly entertained on his return from Parliament, and if all parties would igree for once to sink politics, advantage might be taken of the occasion to answer some of the objections to the Bill, and give to those present and through the Press, some very excellent reasons for passing the Bill next year. —I am, etc., Ratepayer,
