Sir Charles Dilke, member for Forest Dean, speaking at Kermantoo, said were preference given food taxation must be far bigher than suggested, necessitating a separate bargtin with each colony, and requiring constant alteration and causing much friction. Though the proposal was disguised it really amounted to subordination of home interests for tbe material interests of Canada and New Zealand alone, fed the supposed, but not Deal interests, of Australia. At a meeting of the Council of the Central Associated Chamber of Agriculture in London, Mr Rider Haggard moved that the time bad come for a reform of the fiscal system. He said Mr Chamberlain's proposal incidentally benefits agriculture; but that retaliation alone would be ruinous, and that it was better to have no chango than that. Professor Lone stated Mr Chamberkin's scheme would only benefit the big corn farmers, while it injured the stock and dairy farmers. Mr Chaplin said Mr Chamberlain's proposals would benefit all classes, •specially agriculturists. Sir JSdward Strachey (Liberal), M.F. for South Somerset, moved an amendment urging further enquiry, but this was defeated by a large majority, and the debate adjourned till December. Received 6,1.20 a.m. London, November 4. The Leed's Chamber of Commerce by 76 to 65 advocated a modification of the fiscal policy.
