RAID ON A GAMING-HOUSE.
AN EXCITING KNThY, f FOB PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, October 25. About; 10 o'clock on Saturday night some detectives and police raided an alleged "twoup" school in Marionstreet. The building in which the gambling was supposed to have been carried on was known as the Olympic Olub, and was ostensibly used as a school of physical culture and boxing, a pugilist named Sturgion being one of the instructors of the school. For some time past the place had been under suspicion, but an elaborate system of alarms hid been Qtted up, and the officers of the law hud a great difficulty in bringing the raid to a successful issue. Two men who had been acting for the police were stationed inside on i the pretence of being gamesters, and materially assisted in the arrest. The i front door was rushei by Inspector ; Ellison and Chief Detective McGrath |as a player was let out, and the inner guard was secured Wore he could give an alarm. The secood barricade was opened by a confederate, and the rest was easy,, Altogether 35 men were arrested. The manager, named William Eager, alias Richard Oxenbam, is charged with keeping a common gam-ing-house, and the others with being found without lawful excess on premases used as a gaming-house. The accused are principally laborer?, clerks, and theatrical men.
