VOLUNTEER NEWS.

Thk Taranaki Rifles held their usual fortnightly Inspection Parade lasnight, when there was a very good muster. The officers on parade were Captain Weston, L'eutenants Okey ard Lever. Sergeant-Major Anderson was also presnut. The company were exercised in advanced and rear guards and outpost duty. Sergeants Kendall and Morgan received their proficiency cert'ficatea.

The following letter from OaptainAdjutant Taunton was read on parade and received with applause : New Plymouth, October 13tb, 1903. The Officer Commanding Taranaki R.fle?, Djar Sir, —Will you allow me to express to youtsilf and company my grateful thanks for the honour conferred by making me a life honorary member of the Taranaki Rifles, and I do consider it an honour, for a corps thftt can hold i's own year after year with the rifle, and givo a licking to al comers establishes a record that nil should be proud of. I also be;; to thank you very much for your kind expression of opinion in reference to the part taken by myself in volunteering in this district, and can only s>ty j that I have tried to carry out my duties faithfully, and it is a great cotiJsolation to me to know my actions j have gean so highly appreciated, May I the Rifles long continue to flourish is I tha sincere wish of yours truly, I Leonard M. Taunton. At a meetiug cf the Shooting Committee it was resolved that the necessary repairs to the rifla range ar:d target tie put in hand ; that the sum of £5 per year he cha r ged the Egrnont Mounted Rifles for use of tha range and plant (r-ir jpct to the approval of the Guard"); tiiat a roturn match with Tarata Rifls Ciub ba arranged. There will bo a mmting of the executive of the Norih iar «n: ki Rifle Association text Monday evening. The Guards hold a parade this evening..
