GOVETT MEMORIAL.
i'heub was a good attendance at the neetiog called by the Ven. Archdeacon Uole to consider the raising of a ■nomorial to the late beloved ArchIsacon Govett-. Arohdeacon Oole preided, and having opened the meeting vith prayer, veid apobgies from nonUfindance, sent by Messrs Stanley Smith, N. K. McDiarmid, A. Standish md others.
The Archdeacon then dwelt at some j length on tha subject of a memorial to •.he memory of their departed brother, md urgad that the memorial be on the inea of a fund for missioning the back iilcck?. He mcutionnd that tha vescry iad already me% and considered a letter •*mt them by himself suggesting this imm of memorial, and approved of it, n conjunction with a schome for enhrging St. Mary's. The Bishop had i.lso wired i.oping the memorial would ake the form of a fund for extending r ,he privileges of the church to those whose welfare the late Archdeacon had (O much at heart.
Mr Stanley Shaw moved " That it is 1 sirable that a memorial to the late Venerable Archdeacon Govett be established," and spoke very feelingly of the value of the late Archdeaoon's work. His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Oock) seconded, and urged that the ate Rev. H. Brown should in some way be included. Mr Oock went on tq dwell upon the good work done by these two veteran clergymen who had w> long worked side by side. After a few further remarks the motion was eanied unanimouly.
Mr W. H. Skinner then moved— Chat the proposed memorial take the form suggested by the Archdeacon of Taranaki io his letter of 9th icst. to it, Mary's Vestry, viz., (a) provision tor a Missioner or Missioners for the back blooks of Taranaki; (b) some memorial ti'her by way of alteration of jr an addition to St. Mary's Chu r oh." Hfe endorsed wnat had been said and dwelt at some leng'h on the lite Archdeacou's life and work. He also mentioned that the late Archdeacon Govett had given every penny of the moocy he received from the Imperial Government, for visiting the troops, to the Ohurch and it beoame th'< nucleus of the St. Mary's Endowment Fund.
Mr McKellar sscondtd the motion briefly, and it was carried after being supported by Mr Courtney and others. Mr Dempsey then, in the course of a sympathetic speech, proposed ; That the following be an Executive Committee to secure the funds for giving effect to the foregoing resolutions, and who shall report to a meeting of subscribers at not exceeiing three mouths from this date, viz.; The Archie icou of Taranaki, Messrs iJ, if), MoKella-, S. W. Shaw, W. H. Skinner, J. 0. Gaosge, A, Standieb, and S. P, Smith.
Mr Cook seconded the motion, and felt sure the names of the committee would give confidence to the sutsoriber.s and that they would push the matter on.
A general discussion then ensued, the result of which was that every onu present undertook by vote to assist; in j furthering tho object in view, and en, the suggestion of the Mayor tha lata Rav. H. H. B own's name will bo associated with that tf the kte Arch-1 deacon's. The names of sevoral were \ mentioned as substantial sub> cribars,, and Archdeacon Co!o said ho would give .£IOO conditional of £4OO being raised for tha memorial fund and £IOO for the church enlargement fund, nn announcement which was received with appliuse. During tha overling Messrs Skinner and Shaw mentioned that soma three: months ago the late Archdeacon, Govett gave £IOO to the now oifjao j fund, and a few days before he died j he gave his bou an additional £IOO for' the same fund.
