A loiter from Mr Mi stayor, ryla'ive to drainage works, was refo; rad to thu Works Committee with power to act. A formal resolution was passed authorising the seal of the Council to be nffixad to a lease of two sections obtained es a site for the West Ead Fire Station.
W. Armstrong wrote relative to the supply of cement at more than 12s 6d. The Mayor explained that the Engineer had denied arranging that Mr Armstrong should be supplied with cement at 12s 6d a cask. No action was taken. Mr Mestayer wrote forwarding plans ' of drainage. Or. Brooking moved that a committee ba appointed to inspect the plans with a view to modifying same »nd paying attention to local requirements, He proposed the committee should confeist of the Mayor and Crs. Tisch, Bellringer, Burgess, and the mover.—Carried.
A letter was read from A. A. Reynell, printing out that the conditions of tender for the Honui bridge imposed such a heavy bond and deposit, that it would cost the Council a large sum if insisted on,
In reply to the Mayor, the Engineer said that the usual plan was a £5 per cant, deposit and 10 per cent. bond, x but an error had been made by his assistant in the conditions.
Iti was decided to inform applicant that the matter had been rectified.
' The Enginear submitted plan of a rubbish destrucor, and explained that ibo litter might ha built ia conjunction with the asphalting plant so as to utilise wasto heat. Ho reported on progress of contracts tho work of the st.i-ff. He inquired if the drainage work at Wallace Pla:>e was to be proceeded with.
The Mayor favoured spending money on B irrott-streot rather than at Wallace Place. Cr. Alexander moved that Barrettstreet be put in order.
Cr. Tiech eeonded, Or. Ballringer moved that no further work be undertaken till that it; hand is finished.
Or, Brooking seconded tho amendment on the ground that the Engineer had quite enough to do now. After further discussion the motion was withdrawn and the amendment
carried. The Engineer's report was received. The Inspector reported tfyafc all the cabs were in first-class order. The billiard-rooms had all been visited and found to be well conducted—no boys beirg prcsant. He asked for an explanation as to dangerous goods(explosives.) The Mayor explained that the police collected a feo for license to store explosives, and the owners naturally objected to pay twice over. He moved that tho Town Clerk ascertain what c urn was taken in other Boroughs, Tne Inspector (Mr Stohr) inquired what was a reasonable amount of explosives. The Mayor said that this could form f art of the'inquiry in other places. Cr. Collis considered the duty of deciding the point rested on the Inspector under the bye-laws. Or, Wood was thai the police an 4 the Borough Council both | collected fees for these licenses. ' Or. Brooking held the contrary opinion.
The motion was carried. The Works Committee's report nas adopted. The Bcgeryes Committee's report was adopted. On the motion of Or Collis it was decided to erect a fencj on the upper ground of the waterworks. The Mayor stated that on behalf of the Committee be had offered Mr Hood £ls for compensation for loss of land in Diwson-street, which offer would be accepted.—Agreed to. Accounts amounting to £5256 4s 10 j were passed—ordinary £1650 8* lid, loin £3094 lis 2d, abattoir £sll 4s 9d. (jr. Edmunds brought up the qu stion of prosecution for breaehts of bye-laws, and said he stood that the cases were to bo contested. He urged tha'; tbe Council's solicitors should be instructed to assist the police in the prosecutions. Or Alexander moved that Messrs Gtavett and Qailliam be instructed to assist the police in upholding the bye[»Wß. —Carried, On the motion of Or. Engineer was instructed to report on the question of the possibility of laying drain and other pipes under the pathways without! taking up the path. Or. Wood inquired what sort of a joS had been made of the work at the Esplanade, which had been entrusted

Oollis moved that the work be finished at a cost nob exceeding £l2 10a —Carried, The Council went into Committee to opea tenders. Qn resuming the tender qf R, A. liplne for kerbing, eta., at &i per chain was accepted. Other tenders were: W. Armstrong, Frank Kemple, W. Blair, and W. Madder. The tender lof Boon Bras. (£135 10i) for stonefiru»hnr shoot at abattoir site was accepted, Mr Qrayjiug being the only other tenderer, Tiie Oounoil rose at 9.30 p.m.
