At a meeting of the Guards Club on Thursday night, it was resolved ohat a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Captain Taunton for his gratuitous services given to the Guards' tiocial Club, thereby making it a success; and also expressing the Jnpe that his trip to England would be an enjoyable one, and .th»t the time would not be far distant when the members of the club would haye the pleasure of his presence amongst them The resolution was earned amidst applause.
The "Masterton Times" publishes a reply received from Mr Chamberlain to a i petition from VVairarapa Maoris urgin« Mr Seddon's appointment as successor to Lord Raufurly. While recognising his appreciation of the services which Mr fceddon has rendered to New Zealand and the Empire, the King directs Mr Chamberlain to point out that it would be coutiary to universal precedent to appoint as Governor, whose impartiality must be beyond question, any gentleman who has been prominently engaged in the politics' of the colony,

Weston (Weston and Wesrop) for the plaintiff, Mr Hutcheu for the defendant, nftor hearing the evidence his Worship adjourned the ease till 10.30 on I'riday, when the argument of counsel will bo hoard.
Feeling reference was made by the Mayor at the Borough Council meeting on Monday night to the late Archdeacon Govett, and the following resolution was passed unanimously "That this Council place on record their deep regret at the loss of one so intimately connected with the progress of the Borough as the late Archdeacon Govett, and their appreciation of his labours for the benefio of his fellow men ; and that the heartfelt sympathy and condolence of the Council be tendered to the relatives in their bereavement."
During the six months ending September 30th, the value of the principal lines of produce exported from the colony was —Butter L 279.376, cheese L 60.821, beef L 165 111, mutton L 884,796, lamb L 559.019.
In this issue the lessee of the Masonic Hotel, Palmorston North, notifies intending purchasers of that property of his having commenced an action to have the clause in his lease under which the sale is made declared not binding on him.

At the Colonial Conference of Master Bakers held at Auckland on Monday, il was decided to ask the Government to tlx the price of bread throughout the colony, the prices for the various centres to be governed by the ruling price of flour, together with other local circumstances. The Wanganui Band received an enthusiastic welcome home on Monday, after their success at the Timaru contest.
On the application of Mr Quilliam, probate if the will of the late Venerable Archdeacon Govett was granted by the Supreme Court of New Zealand to Clement William Govett, the executor named in the will.
Mr P. W. Duval, the taurine manager of the Stine a*d Evans comedy company, is m New Plymouth making arrangements for the appearance of the company. The company is quite new to this colony, nnd consists of artists specially selected from the best theatres in America. In Auckland, Vv ellington and Southern cities the company filled seasons of three and foar weeks, and then playgoers wanted more.
Messrs E. M. Smith and Jennings arrived from Wellington on Saturday evening, and return this morning. At a special meeting of shareholders of the Lancaster Park Company, Christchurch, on Monday, a motion that the park should not be let on Qood Friday tor sports was rejected by 163 votes to 60.
Not wishing to clash with the Catholic Social on Thursday, the Star juniors have postponed their long night dance till Tuesday, the 20ch inst.—Advt
