SHIPPING CASUALTIES
PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, Monte Video, October 9. A magazine aboard the TJrugayian gunboat General Rivera exploded at Montevideo. The vessel sa&k. Many were killed and the commander was burned to death. Lyttelton, October 11. \ Captain McAlistdr, of tbe steamer Toroa, which arrived from the Chatham Islands on Saturday night, reports that between August 23rd and 26th wreckage was found at Te Whagru and i Kaingora, on the main Island, and on Pitts Island. It comprised a life-buoy and boat tiller, both bearing the name of Loch 1-ong, the stern sheets of a life bo\i, boat mast and oars, and other fitting", and a quantity of deck plankicg. The weather when the wreckage came ashore was thick, with strong north-easterly winds. The two Misses Shand, rssiding at Te Whagru, state they hfard guns fi>ed while at tea on August 23rd. The Loch Long was an iron ship of 1200 tons, commanded by Captain J. Strachan, She left New Caledonia for the Clyde with ore on April 29th list.
