Sir S. Griffiths was undoubtedly the delegates chief opponent. Although his appointment as Chief Justice did not augur ill for the future of the High Court, he (Mr Kingston) would have preferred to see another more in touch with Australian democratic sentiment and national hopes. Therefore he thought the appointment was a fatal mistake. Concluding, he said: —" My accusation against the Government is that for some unaccountable reason -he es-ential quality if fidelity to Austib ia has been forgotten in the belection of the chief guardian of the Australian constitution,
