The Daily News. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 2, 1903. THE ABANDONMENT OF THE HARBOUR BILL.
The Hawera Star says " It will be seen that the Harbour Bill proposal h?s come to a rather sudden end, On the whole we do not think this is to be in anyway i egret ted. The immediate need for the propossd loan has not yet been demonstrated, and the better policy would be to go on improving the harbour as far as may be possible with existing means, The time muy came, we hope it will soon, when there shall be such a development of the trade of the port and district as will justify the making of a harbour for ocean going steamers, but it is not wise to force the pace, especially in the present outlook of the money market, and the comparative nearness of the time when the existing loan will expire, and i will be necessary to review the whole of the fiaanciul arrangements of the ! Board." Our Hawera contemporary appears to overlook the fact that th absence of facilities, urgently r< quired at the Breakwater, is the chief stiimb | ling block to that development of trade I which our contemporary hopos may soon come. The Star has all along opposed the extensiom of tin breakwater, and yet the advantage to Hawera of a direct port within less than 80 miles by railway, is incalculable. This appears to be a point of view, which our southern friends entirely overlook.
