HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The Board met on Monday, Present: Messrs Tisch (chairman), MoDonald, Pigott, Andrews, Brown, Liardet, Gray, Stobr, Hine, and Mackay. The Chairman reported having provided with good homes the two boys referred to in his previous report. As to Edgecombe's case, an agent of the Insurance Company had visited the Eoifte with a view to making a compromise, but Edgecombe refused to entertain the proposal. The Company was liable for .£3OO, not a weekly sum of 22s 6d for life. Messrs Sladden and Palmer had gratuitously prepared a plan for an ornamental lake in the grounds. The small paddock near the morgue had been ploughed and sown with oats. On August 28th Mr Preston gave notice to leave, bat a few days after wished to withdraw it. The request was, however, declined, and thereupon he ceassd work on sth September. Applicatiens were called for the vacancy, and Mr and Mrs Dawson were recommended. The action of the Chairman in accepting the resignation of J. Preston and in giving a month's notice to Mrs Preston was confirmed.—On a division, Mr and Mrs R, Dawson were appointed, by 7 to 3, to fill the positions of gardener and laundress respectively. Several cases of applications for remission ot fees, etc., were dealt with. The resignations of Miss Oarmichaal, as head nurse, and Miss Stothart were accepted with regret. The Chairman's action in appointing Mies Lawson as head nurse was confirmed. The Board's solicitors notified that the Hawera Board declined to pay the XIIO in respect of the Egmont County's contribution due at 31st March last. The Chairman stated that he understood that Mr Winks would confer with him with a view to arranging an amicable settlement. The Egmont County wrote pointing out that the Board's levy was incorrect owing, as they contended, to an error in the valuation roll.—The clerk reported that after correspondence with the Valuation Department the right figures had been obtained, and would probably be accepted by the County. The clerk of the Egmont County wrote pointing out the necessity of a hospital at Opuoake, but bad been informed by the secretary that Opunake was outside the Board's district. The hon. librarian, Mr Chinn, wrote stating the way in which he had expended the £lO grant, and reporting that there were 500 volumes now in the library in perfect order. On the motion of Mr Stohr, seconded by Mr Gray, it was resolved that a suitable memento of the Board's appreciation of Mr Chinn's services be procured and presented to him en behalf of the Board. The Borough Council wrote notifying their approval of the proposed lake in the Hospital grounds. The name of Miss Isabella M. Bell was ordered to be placed ,on theprobatianer's list. The Auckland Board wrote in reply to a demand for hospital expenses in relation to two cases from that district. They admitted liability in one case but not in the other. It was decided to take a ten years lease of the Board's present office. A request by the N.P. Gaoler to allow a prisoner named Harland to be treated in the Hospital was considered. Dr. Leatham advised that the case was not a fit one for treatment in the Hospital, as the man was suffering from senile decay.—The matter was left in the hands of the Chairman to deal with. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr McDonald, it was resolved, unanimously, that a letter be sent to Mr and Mrs Farrar conveying the Board's appreciation of the manner in which they bar l both carried out their duties as manager and matron of the Old People's Home, and stating t'iat it afforded the Board much pleasure to ofl'tr them an increase in salary of £25 a year. Accounts amounting to £520 8s 9d were passed for payment. Pursuant to notice, Mr Liardet moved that if the Borough of Stratford will provide a suitable building with two wards and accommodation for a trained nurse, this Board wiil undertake the equipment and maintenance 'f such Cottage Hospital. He presented petitions from 800 settlers in favour of the proposa!, *nd Htrougly urf,jd the Board to help those who helped themselves. After considerable discussion, Mr McDonald moved to defer further consideration of the motion till the next meeting of the Bom'..- -Oamod.
