NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
WKLOOME BOOIAL. There was an excellent attendance of ladies at the welcome social to the members of the National Council in St Mary's Hall on Thursday evening ; alio a number of gentl»men amoDgst whom were the Revs. F. G. Evans, J. N Buttle and W. R. Woolley. The hall was arranged as a drawing-room and an exceedingly pleasant evening was spant, and the committee (Mesdamen Gray, Dockrill, E trans, Home and Misses Draw and Ahier) are to be heirtily congratulated on its suocess. During the evening songs were sung by the Misses Baker, Oampboll, and Ambury, Mrs Burgsss, Mr Gray and Dr. Bennett.
Mrs Sievwright aUo gave a very interesting address, thankiog everyone for the kindnesi shown to the Oounoil since its arrival in New Plymouth, and then spoke on " Woman's place and woman's work and her disabilities." She also advocated the formation of a local branch of the Oounoil.
Mrs Williamson, of Wanganui, also gave an excellent address on the value of woman's work on Education and Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, school committees, and as visiting justices to goals, reformatories and homes. Mrs Atkinson made a very telling speech, answering the objections to woman taking her rightful plaoa in our social, political and commercial system, each speaker being very heartily applauded during and at the conclusion of her remarks. Refreshments were then handed round after which "God Save the King" conoluded a very enjoyable evening,
