AMATEUR OPERA CLUB

H.M.S. PWAFORK. On Welnesday evening the above Club produced Gilbert and Sullivan's wellknown and ever popular opjra H.M.S. Pinafore, they hive every reason to be gratified wi'.b the success which attended their efforts. There was a good hiu<»e, the piec t was well mounted, the dressc-s g)od and the stags effects B'riking, and above all tbe posing and singing werp, oa tin wholo, most creditable to all cono.'.rnoil. Mr James Paul was a capital F rat Lord of the Admiralty and gave consider ible dignity to tho part. As Captain Corcoran, Mr E. Clarke had a p;rt that suited him exactly and he osrtaialy did it justice, both in singing aid scting, thus ■ arning well-m?rited applauss. Mr W. Perry gave a very good imparsonation of Rilf Rickatraw, his singing as usual being very pleasing. The part of Dick Djadeya was to have undertaken by Mr H. Ainsworth, but owing to Mrs Aineworth's illness Mr Djlabaye took the part and acq litted himself witb much distinction as the applause bestowed oa his efforts testified. Mr Ryan also mule a grext success of his represen'ation'of Bill Bobsfciy, his rendering of "Jick'a the B>y" beina deseivad enured. Mr W. L 33 played the part of Bob Bucket very eatisfactorily. The star of the evening, however, was Master Q lilliam (thj midshiptnite) and he fairly brought down the hous 3 with his spirited rendering of "For He is an Englishman." His acting throughout surprised and captivated the audience who lavished on him thvir heartiest appUus\ A more complete suacss could no hive been achieved. Miss Murphy (Jo.ephine) sang and acted excellently, her sieging being pirticularly placing, espicitlly in " If only you we-o win-." VI is A. Clirks was also v ry charming as H«be, and materiilly helped to the success of the opera. Messrs Ross and Saon received a well deserved encore for a cleverly executed hornpipe, <md all tbe o'her pirts we e cipibly filed. That tbe audiencthoroughly enj >yed the performance was abundantly evident. The performance will be repeated this evening, when it should again attract a large audience. Not only hive the Tnames team been invited to be pr.H-nt, bu; the inmates of the O.d People's Home have alsi received a eimihr invitation—a kindness that will be appreciated,
