VOLUNTEER NEWS.

A general parade of the Taranaki Battalion took place on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance of all ranks. The staff officers present were Colonel Ellis, Major Okey, and CaptainAdjutant' Taunton. The Riflse, under Captain Wes'oD, Lieutenants Ota'y and Lever, the Guards, ui;der Lieutenant Messenger, and the Gmison Band, undar Bandmaster Gordon, were in fairly full strength. The usual movements were executed with commendable precision. Lieutenant Okey wes examined in practical work by the Examining Board, Co'onel Ellis atd Captain Taunton, Major Okey not acting on this occasion. It wes supposed that Colonel Webb, Officer Commanding the District, would be pressnt, but much to the disgust of the men he did not put in an appearance, simply because he could not be in two places at once, and he was, by appointment, inspecting the Wangarsui Volunteers last night. At the SBm9 time it would be very interesting to know why'it was officially stated that he was to be in New Plymouth. Men do not appreciate this sort of thing. We regret to learn that Voluntaer 0. Saddler, a member of the Rifl s and a returned trooper, is very ill indeed, j his condition causing seriouc anxiety to his friends.
