SLY GROG-SELLING.

CONVICTIONS AND SENTENCES, FU PRESS ASSOCIATION. Hamilton, August 29. Mr Northcroft, S.M., eisting at Te I Awarautu, heard the following addi- •! tions.l King Country sly grog oases : ; Mrs Waugh, Ongarne, on two charges wns convicted, sentence being deferred.

James Murtagh, Ongarup, on two charges pleaded guilty, ar.d was ordered to step down. Robert Allen, Taumarainui, on three charges wnts convicted jand sentence deferred. Eobert Allen was also cbnrged with making out a J false consignmant cote. The evidence • showed that accused consigned five 1 roses fi'cm Auckland to Taumaranui as j sundries, but the contents were mostly s spirits. Decision was reserved. James I Percy Goffy was charged with wilfully 'obstructing Constable Fiizgerald in the I execution of his duty at Taumaranui on 21ot August. The obstruction occurred while the constable was executing a search warrant upon defendant's premises to discover liquor. The discovery was made. Decision reserved. Richard Mitchell and Hugh Oavanagh, who were convicted yesterday, came up for sentence, and the magistrate ordered each of them to give security for j£so and come up for sentence wLen called upon, on condition that they should not again enter the King Country, but if they did come to the King Country again a warrant would at once be issued for their arrest and they would be brought up for sentence. Similar orders were made in the cases of Arthur Powell and James Murtagh, the latter of whom is now serving two months on a former charge j of sly grog-selling. Tbe cases against Joseph Gardiner, Mrs Qardiaer, James GafFey, Priscilla Gaffey, George Self, and Richard Burnett alias Deadwood , Dick were adjourned till Monday next. The nature of the sentences passed caused great surprise to those dealt ■ witb. One defendant said he would rather be Bent to gaol for two months and then allowed to return to the King ' Country, but his desire was not complied witb. Two others said the King Country, or even Te Awamutu, would never see them again as they had had ■ enough of it. AsHBtJBTON, August 30. A warrant has been issued for the, arrest ef the caretaker of the Mt. Somers Hotel on a oharge of sly grog- j selling. The man has disappeared from the district.
