However, the bretss freshened to six miles from the south-weet and the yachts started. The course was similar to that of Saturday. I The Reliance was eight minutes ahead on the one dead beat to windward. Sir Thomas Lipton declares that if unsuccessful now he will certainly challenge again, though not next year. The Canadians will probably is3ne a challenge for 1904. Auckland, August 28. A private cable says that the wind was light. With an hour and ten minutes to go 'the Reliance was six miles ofi and the Shamrock hopelessly astern. The race had resolved itself Into a match between the Reliance and tint.

Ultimately the wind became variable and died away. On the homeward course the ebbing tide interfered with the drifting race, the Shamrock bung upwards of a mile astern. The Reliance's c' ief contest was •gainst time. The ram was declared off owing to lack of wind. The Reliance finished the run but exceeded her time by eight and a-half minutes.
