EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board mot oa Wednesday. Present: Mr E. (J. Allsworth (chairnun), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Adlam, McDonald, Wade, Mackay, Faull and Morton, The Returning Officer repotted the result of the recent election of mamburs. The Chairman reported having appointed Mr A. J. Harding to Mahoc, Mr 0. L. Allan to Toko, Mra Birkett temporary at Huiroa, and Mr Kirkpatrick temporary to Denbeigh-road, Miss L. Riley temporary at Mahoe. He also referred to the official inquiry iato the fire at Uruti School, and the laying of the foundation stone of the Technical School at Stratford by the Hon. 0. H. Mills. Also Uio institution of theory classes in p'n tubing. Ha had taken the oppor-unity of Mr Mae kay's prtsauce at Wellington t.v ask him to intt, "iew the Minister regard • ing the Opaku Reserve, and as to the additional 9d per head capitation beiog granted the Board. He had sent a protest to the Department against the proposal to strike Secretaries of Education Boards off the franking list, Iu conclusion as his term of offioe as Chairman had expired, he thanked the Board for their- hearty assistance.— Adopted. On the motion of Mr Mackay, seconded by Mr Fault, it was resolved that the Board wishes to record in it» | micuiea its cardial appreciation of the I able and efficient maimer in which the Chairnun conducted the Board's business during the past year, Mr Allsworth was then unanimously re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. The following members wers elected on the Standing Committees:—Finance: Messrs Allewogth, Faull, and Morton. Teachers Selection: Messrs Mackay, Adlam, and Allsworth. Reserves : Messrs Faull and Wade. Sewing: Mesdames Cornwall, Dougherty, Wade, McKay (Stratford), and Miss Hampton. The following Commissioners were appointed:—Pukearuhe, Messrs Gilbert and Thompson; Lappertoo, Messrs Brown trad Fussell; Tahora, Messrs Rogers and Gate,
Mr T. Morgan's appointment to the Tikoraogi Committee was confirmed. The Architect reported that the building at Huirangi needed inside and outside painting and other repairs. Leaks at Inglewood were beiog attended to. A number of repairs were required «t Okaco, especially to drains, etc; There was a strong feeling that a new and up-to-date building should be built instead of spending money on the old one. Mr Gtay'e tender of £ZS for repairs to residence at Opunake had boen accepted. A fence w*a required there and he recommended an iron fence should be erected.—Adopted. Applications from the Tikorangi and Mangorei Committees as to school porches were referred to the architect to report on,
A subsidy of £2 Kh towards expense of drainage at 0 inui was granted. The Pihama Committee applied for a refund ef expense of repairing chimney. —Granted. The Lincoln road Committee are to be informed that the Board cannot at present reconsider the question of the removal of the teacher's reridenoe. Mr Crawford's offer for the eld iron and the tank at TJruti was referred to Mr Faull with power to act. The Riupuha Committee wrote asking for a level floir to be put down at the new sohool so as to make it available for socials, etc., and stating the householders would subscribe the extra oost of having the raised portions made in sections,
After considerable discussion it was decided not to, alter the plan of the floor, an amendment to comply with the request being lost by 5 to 4, Mrs Dougherty, and Messrs Adlam, Taylor and Morton voting with the ayes, A letter from the. Cardiff Committee as to a curtain for the school was referred to the Inspector with power to aot. A request for a wash-house at the teaoher'a residence could not be entertained.
The HJltham Stratford and Tarata, Committees are to be informed, in reply to their letters as to accident insurance, that they must consult their own solioitors in such mitter. The resignations of Mr Gush, Denbigh Road, Miss Arrow, Oourtenaystreet, and Mr Allen, Omata, were accepted. Mrs Martin was appointed mistress of the Oourtenay-street School, and the appjintmeut of the female teachers at this Central was confirmed. The following sewing teachers were appointed:—Mrs West to Salisbury Road, Miss Hint* to Lincoln Road, Mtes Ericson, Puogarehu* Mrs Stockman, Waihi. The action of the Cardiff, L«pperlon, Bell Bluck, and TJrenui Committees in closing their schools on account of flickuess, was confirmed. The Kahui Committee were granted the necessary wire and staples to fenae in their school grounds. Mr Dempsey, Central School, wrote applying for leave to live out of the town for awhile so as to beoefi!s his health.—Granted on usual conditions. The Tututawa Committee again wrote as to grazing horses.—Laid oa table.
The Inspector reported that the Saturday chases in brickhying and cardboard modelling had been concluded ; that for brickraaking 56 were enrolled, 40 were examined, 24 securing first-class pisses, 11 second-olass, two third-class, and one failed. The attendance at 'he carton work was slightly lesj. He spoke in the highest terms of the diligence, zeal, and skill of the instructors and he recommended an honorarium of .£5 to each instructor (Mrs Dowlng and Miss Aitken) and £3 7s 6d to the latter for travelling expenses. —Adopted. Toe Inspector recommended refunds for apparatus, etc., to Egmont-road, Oarrington Roid and Inglewood schools.—Adopted. Messrs Wilson and Grey wrote on behalf of W, J. Murphy, applying for payment of £9 3s for fencing at the iNewal Road School site.—Thfy are to jbe informed the Boird deolioes to recognise the claim. A letter from the Ohi(f Officer of Health relative to improvements at luglawood, was r<femd to the architect to reply to. Complaints from the Commissioner and teacher at Pukearuhe ware referred lo Mr Faull to iuquire into. A letter from the Department relative to the Inspector's visits to outlying districts to report on applications for new fchools was referred to the Chairman to deal with. The Chairman s action in protesting ■ against the withdrawal of the franking : privilege was endorsed, and the Board expressed a hope that the Minister would reconsider his decision owing to the financial difficulties of the Bond. A vote of thanks to Mr Mackay for 1 hi* trouble at Wellington relative to 1 the Opaku Reserve was passed. The architeot is to be instructed to call for tenders for additions to the Huiakama school. Mr Faull reported as to the disposal of the old building at Orenui, and recommending that a portion be used for a library and the remainder for a shelter shed.—Adopted. The Reserves Committee's report was adopted, and the architect is to be instructed to report on the cost of giving effect to their recommendations regarding the Waiters East residence. The other recommendations ware deferred till next meeting. The Stratford Committee wrote relative to a proposed exhibition of work. —lt was decided that the Board approve and sanction the proposal to hold the proposed 'exhibition to celebrate the opening of the Technical School. Mr Wade was requested to report on the question of a proposed side school at Westown. Accounts amounting to £639 9s < (building), £1466 7s 6d (general), £l6 12s 101 (manual end technical) were passed. The Board rose.
