TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
, FIB PRJSB6 ASSOCIATION. ' WSLLINGTON, AuaUSt 25. A deputation from the Trades and Labour C-i f lence celd in Grey month some months ago waited on the P-ie-mibr this evening to Eubmit the resolotions passed thereat. Mr Seddon, in reply, said that so i far as the State Bmk was concerned lie would not go to the extent of saying ; that the commercial business of the country should be conducted through : • State Bank. As to the Bank * of New Zealand, he believed that it should devote something out of its profits for what the State had been doing. He did not think it wculd be to the interest of the co'oiy to go further than retain a partnership. In regard to periodical revolutions of leasee, there was a large majority of people against leasing when there was revaluation, and this question would have to be left for the people to decide at the next general election. Regarding the municipal franchise be still considered tenants were vitmily ratepayers, and he hoped to make further improvements in this direction. Touching on the initiative being placed in the hands of the people, if Parliament widentd the scope of th» present Referendum Bill in that dij action, he would be quite prepared to trust the electors Preference wag now in a sense established for unionists, and he did not think Parliament would go further. He promised favourable consideration to the request for a suba'dy for Trades' Hall if the money was to be ■pent for the benefit of all workers.
