It is officially announced that • British column oocsuting of SO white men sod 800 rank and file with 4 Maxims and 3 smaller guns, successfully attacked the town of Durui oo the morning of July 27. The figh ing luted until dark sad the opposition of the natives was most determined. House to house fighting wts carried on and the town was completely destroyed, The bodies of 700 of the enemy were counted, including those of the departed Sultan of Sokoto and a majority of his chiefs. The British losses were as follows: Killed, Major Marsh, four rank and file, and six carriers; wounded: - Captain Hamilton Browne severely, but prr grossing favourably, Major Hummer end Captain Lewis slightly, 62 rank «nd file and seven carriers.
