The Wftiroa County Council has re* solved to ask the Government to send the electric it expert to Waikaromoana, where the Waikaretakaha river falls 1500 feet in three miles, giving a power alleged to be almost equU to that of Niagara. To morrow at 2 30 p.m., Mr Newton King will sell by auction at his mart a choice collection of paintings by Mr J. Douglass Perrett and other well known artists. The pictures, which are now on view, aro a beautiful selection, nicely finished and mounted, and are well worth ' inspection. Anyone wishing to beautify their homes should not fail to attend this sale of huh class works of art. Mr Newton King advertises a choice lot of fruit and sholter trees to be sold at the Haymarket Yards on Saturday, on account of Mr J. H. Duncan. It is stated that some local patrons of athletics are trying to secure a few acres on tho Yeale estate. This is a good move, not only lor the town, but for the estate. The Morshead Nursery Company are now supplying choice fruit trees, hardy shrubs, hedge plants otc , etc., in great variety, all carefully prepared for safe removal. Intending planters would do well to call at the Nursery, South road, or branch, Lemon-street, or ring up Telephone 214. New booklet free on application. * In the Police Court on Wednesday, before Mr E. (j-. Allsworth, J.P., George Coyle, alias George Lslik, was fined 10s and costs 2 s for a second offence ot drunkenness within the past six months. A deputation of sympathisers with the Newtown hotelkeepors wai:ed on the Premier on Wtdnesday to urge that the hotels should be kept open until the question at issue was de'6idt>d by the Privy Council Mr Seddon reiterated tho views he had previ >usly expressed on the subject in the House, and he gave a pledge that such a situation should not recur, as the Act would be amended. He also stated that should the licensees bj compelled to close now, and the Privy Council decided that the licenses should be granted, he would support a claim for compensation, but could not pledge the Government on the matter. Advices from Jamaica states that relief work in connection with the hurricane is progressing satisfactorily. The Govern ! ment is spelling i' 20,000 in repairs tc public buildings, loads, and railways, besides making advances to fruit growers.
