IN BANKRUPTCY. In re J. N. Whitfield.—Mr Hutchen atpeared for the bankrupts discharge 1 on the ground that he was now in Victoria. He had made every effort to get a living in New Zealand bus had , failed to do so, and had gone ti South Australia, and was now in Victoria, and had no intention of returning to New Zealand. The Deputy Official Assignee had reported adversely on the ' ground that bankrupt had kept no books, but this was not so, as he bad been able to get a very full statement of bis affairs from his books. J The Deputy Offici il Assignee opposed the discharge on the grounds stated in 1 his report. No creditors opposed tbe application. 1 His Honor said he would like to , read through the evidence of bank- , rupt's public examination, ard would give bis decision at 10.30 or Thursday. Albert Elgan's application for discharge was adjourned to TLursday at 1 10.30 a.m. j The Court rose. THE CASK OF BRANDON. It will be remembered that at the last sitting of the District Court Kis Honor Judge Ket : le r< ftrred to the case of Brandon, Hi? Honor informed a representative cf the Daily News on Wednesday that he was in hopes provision would shortly be made for I such cases. Brandon was commit'ed for trial on 22nd April last, and as the District Court does not appear to have J jurisdiction to try him, fce has to rer main in gaol tiil the next sittings of I the Supreme Court, on 30th September I next, a period of five months. If the Dirtiict Court had had jurisdiction to ( deal with the casp, Brandon ccuH have beien tried at the lass fittirv f the } District Court, held on 20th May last, or at the quirt-rly sitting of the Dis- . trict Court, which commenced yesterday. Mr Hogg, M.H.U., h<rs brought in a Bill this session to giva the District Court extended jurisdiction, and Bran- ' don's ease and many others which could be mentioned show that' an embedment cf the taw is urgently required. It sefm*, to say the least, unfair that an accused person should I be kept in prison for five or six months • before his guilt or innocence can be - established.
