HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The Board met on Monday. Present: Messrs Tiseh (chairman), McDonald, Pigc't, Andrews, BrowD, Maekay, Stobr, W. J. Gray, Hi no and Liardet. Two spp'.icitioEs for remission of fees were made. In one case the full amount hfd been paid and therefore no conception could be granted. The other ca o was adjourned for further consideration. The Chairman reported that the work of beautifying the grounds hsd pnsbed ahead, and planting for s'hir. str-oij r-aa neatly finished. Tne Lionrd's thanks were due to Messrs Sladden and Palmer for voluntary work in connection with taking levelp, etc., of the like. He recommended that the Board in fu'ure provide office accommodation, instead of pursuing the present unsatisfactory system by which the stcretaiy has to fiLd offices, and that if the suggestion wss udcpted, the sicretary's salary be reduced to £2OO per annum. The r: commendation was adopted. Ho furihor reported that M. Divers had Leen banded over into his brother's care at Dannevirke. The Stipendiary Magistrate had stated that he had written to the Government with a view of giving magistrates power to commit tuch caf63 to the Old People's Home. The Board should strenuously oppose this. If cases of this tjp? were committed to the Heme it meant a heavy annual expense for exta attendant", end the ratepayers already contribute over £2OOO per annum incharitabl6 aid rates, and why should these i atepayei 3 be compelled to provide for inmates who gravitate here from other districts? The members agreed with the chairman, and he was authorised to place the position, from the Board's point of view, before the Government, The Chairman further reported that two tors who were placed out some time ago in a gocd homa had become to intractable that tbe people in whose care they were had asked to be relieved of them. Mr Tisch therefore reluctantly urged that the boys ehoull be committed to an industrial heme, acd the matter was left in the hands of the Chairman and secretary. Miss E. Fuller's resignation was accepted. Tbe name cf Mis 3 S. White, of Raho'u, will be placed on the list of applicants for probationersbips. The application of the Borough Engineer for peimirsicn to carry storm water from Euller street into the hospital gully was declined, as the board proposed to form a lako in the grounds. The Hawera County Councl wrote in reference to payment of suVsidy, which covered a portion of the new Egmont County. The Chairman said the Hawera County Council had received notice to pay by noon on Monday. If that were not done proceedings would be taken to recover the amount. Thb Custcdhn of the Heme reported on the work of the month.— Adopted, \ The hororary librarian (Mr W. T. Chiiuiau) reported that some of the books in the hospital weie getting vory worn and should be replaced. He asked for a grant of £lO.—A grant of £lO was made, the selection of new boobs being lefo to the Chairman and the librarian. Mr Tisch's report for the month was read and sdop'ed. A match between Frankley road and Waitara took place at Waitara on Tuesday, resul'ing in a win for Frank-ley-road by 67 points. The weather was miserably cold and windy.
