J Kidd, the victim of the late mail ooaoh fatality, held at K*»ponga, the jury brought in the following verdict : " That the deceased, Thomas John Kidd, met his dsath by adcidentally getting drowned through the oapsizing of the mail coach in the Mangawhero river on the morning of Friday, the 14th day of August, 1903" ; and also added the following rider, " We wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the urgent and absolute necessity of a bridge being built over the Mangawhero river, at the Eltham Opunake toad." Writing on the Harbour Extension scheme, the Mftnaia paper says :—" It is, of course, but natural that local taxpayers, under the circumstances, should l>ok favourably upon any statement made against further borrowing, but even to the

The New Plymouth Amateur Dramatic and Comedy Oompanv had their first rehearsal last night, in view of their going to Ingle tvood. There Was a full muster of members present, and the visit promises to be a great success. The company appear at Inglewood on Tuesday, 25th August, when they will stage "British Born."

The New Plymouth Literary and Debating Sooiety spent a very interesting time on Tuesday evening, in the consideration of essays read by Messrs Stevenson and Green, the contributions afterwards being discussed by quite a number. Tha subjects were " Singie Tax," and " What is originality "respectively. Mr Holloway presided. The principal subject for debate at the Parlimentary Union meeting on Tuesday next will be the second reading of a measure to institute Classen for tha tuition of handicrafts in the public schools. We regret to learn of the dealh of tho youngest daughter of Mr J. O. Hrrkness, (flesse) which occurred after a very short illaiMS yesterday. Banks the new Clerk of the Court, arrived from the south on Tuesday morning, and took up his duties, It is with groat regret we have to an. nouncj tho cUiath of Mr James Butter worth, who has, for the better part of half a century been one of the best know residents of New Plymouth, It was only on Thursday last that we learned he was attacked with pleurisy, and though at first no danger was apprehended, pneumonia supervened, and his illuoas became more critical. On Monday evening he becamo! delirious, though during Tuesday he had j periods of consciousness, but passe-l ! quietly away late in the eveuin,?. The deepest sympathy will be felt for his bereaved widow and children, by a very l«i?e circle from the Premier downwards., The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon.
