VOLUNTEER NEWS.

The School of Instruction met yesterday. In the afternoon musketry and topography were again taken, and in the evening tbe aubjfet of fortifications was dealt with, Serg*ant-Maj.->r Buesell being the instructor, Lie utanant-Co-lone) Owen is laid up with influenza. Volunteers will please note that the parade on the night of Wednesday, 26th instant, will be in "Review Order," i.e., scarlet uniform and fi?ld service cape, and on Thursday in full dreris,

At the annual ball of the Wairoa Mounted Rifles (Waverley) the members of the corps presented Captain Howie with a handsome gold watcb and chain, as a slight token of the esteem in which he is held by the Company, whom he has faithfully served for 29 years, 20 years of which be has held a commission. Captain Howie has been promoted to the position of adjutant, and has, therefore, had to resign command of his old corps. Some effort should be made to induce the authorities to train the Stratford Mounted Rifles and their horses to New Plymouth on Thursday, 27th instant. We learn that some of the troopers have to ride 15 and 20 miles before reaching tbeir headquarters st Stratford, The trip means three days away from home, so that some consideration should be shown to the men and their horses. Colonel Ellis might probably be able to make representations on the subject.
