OBITUARY.
PHIL MAY. PER T-sras ASSOCIATION. Received 6, 10.26 p.m. Londos, August 6. The death is reported of Phil May, the artist Newgpapars deplore his low, and express great admiration for fail talent. [The late Phil May had a remarkable career in the domain of art. It commenced when he was 12 years old at the Grand Theatre, Leeds, where he was engaged mixing distemper for the scene painter, The next step was designing oomic masks and dretses, then he got orders for portraits. A year or tifo later he was engaged to play Bmali parts at the Theatre and do six sketches a week for window bill advertisements. With £1 in his pocket he eventually went to London, being sent back the next day by his uncle, but he left the train and walked back to London, where, for a time, he endured great privations. At latt one of his drawings attracted the attention of the <S't. Stephen?* Review, and then he put his foos firmly on the ladder of fame. His cartoons and sketches in that journal rapidly brought him into the front rank of clever sketch artists, and he was credited with earning £IOO a day. Subsequently he went to Sydney by engagement, and the fiae climate expanded hiß bodily and artis'ic powers.]
