McDiarmid (in the chair), Roy, Dcckrill, Wilson, P. Smith, and Allsworth. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from the Education Department disallowing capitation for two free tuition pupils I from Waitara on the ground that their I late arrival at school caused them to] lose instruction in several important' subjects, also in the case of a free tuition pupil who had been receiving instruction at Hawera District High School, but whose family removed to New Plymouth, on the ground of age. After considerable discussion the Board resolved to inform the Department that it fails to see the justice of withholdirg -capitation in the case of the boy O'Loughlin, seeing that he was receiving tuition and recognised as a pupil at the Hawera District High School. In reference to the Waitara cases the Board resolved to address the Chamber of Commerce, stating that the Board understood it was about dealing with the question of the railway time-table, and asking it to suggest such alterations as would suit children attending the New Plymouth High School. A report was read from the Sanitary Inspector re the sanitation of the High School, making certain suggestions regarding the same. It was resolved to acknowledge the letter, and refer the matter to the chairman to deal with. The instructor of the gymnasium applied for an increase of salary from 12s to 16s per week. After some discussion, in the course of which appreciation was expressed of the value of the services rendered, as the Board is short of funds the instructor was requested to renew hiß application later on. The Principal reported that Dr Home had given a very interesting land instiuctive lecture to the classes on " Physiology," It was resolved to pass a very hsarty vote of thanks to Dr, Home for his lecture. The Chairman reported on behalf of himself and Mr Berry regarding their interview with the Premier relative to the Maraia leases, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the deputation for their services. A notice is to be sent to parents whose fees are six months in arrears that unless paid without delay the accounts will ba handed to the Board's solicitor to collect. In the one case where the father of the family had lately died the fees were remitted. After gome discussion, the accounts (including the expanses of the deputation to Wellington) were passed for payment. The Chairman reported that the matter of an outhouse at the residence of the Principal, including the fixing of a copper boiler, referred to Mr Berry and himself, had been satisfactorily arranged, and was nearly completed.
