Cardinal Sarto has been elected Pope; London, August 4. { The announcßment of Cardinal Sarto's election c-me through Renter's correspondent at Rom". After his election, Cardinal Sarto, following the usual ceremony, pronounced a public benediction from the inner balcony of Saint Peter's. Hej was received with acclamation by enormous crowds. The new Pope, who at the time of his election was Patriarch of Venice, is 68 years of age. He is described as being of conciliatory temper and a favourite with clericals and Liberals alike. He is of humble origin and has risen from a country curacy. iJe cotnmarded the Gospel to be read and explained in the vernacular on Sundays and feast days in his diocese of Venice, where his firmness remedied the deplorable laxity of his predecessor's indulgence. ! The election of Cardinal Sarto was welcomed by tbe King of Italy who is visiting Venice. • Cardinsl Sarto has taken the name of Pius X. !

He declared he was unworthy of the choice, but it it pleased God to direct the vote of the Sacred College in his favour he was prepared to submit. The Cardinals, kneeling, received the first pontifical benediction, congratulated the Pope and kissed his hands. Oo assuming the pontifica.l vestments 'he Popß was seated in the Sedk Qes"iotorii, and received the Cardinals' adoration. Each of tbem knteling kissed h : s hands, feofc, and cheek- - , the Pontiff returning the kiss of p~ace. Meanwhile Cardinal Mxcchi announced to the givat crowd surging round the B'.silica - hit Cardinal Sarto had been elected, the tews being received with enthusiasm and ringing of bells. Liter, the Pope, wearing a white soutane and red stol*, appeared at the inner Loggia of Saint Peter's and blessed the congregation. He was received with thunderous acclamations and cries of " Long live Pius the Tenth." A great procession of diplomatists, high prelate?, and notables subsequently visited the Vatican to offer their congratulations. The n?w Pope's distinguishing characteristic is piety.
