j At Stratford His Excellency tho Governor was met, on the arrival of his special train, by tho May r, a member of the Borough Council, the Town Clerk, and the Ohairmin of the District High Sch >ol Committee. His Excellency informed the Mayor that it was hia intentiod to stay in the colony until May, as it was his wLst: to be present at the opening of the Veterans' Home. On Monday night Mr J G. Harkness entertained the employees of the Midhirst diiry factory. The employes presented Mr Harkness with a set of carvers, and expressed regret at losing a man with whojn they had always worked so amicably. Mr Hurkness in reply expressed regret at lowing the district, and said he would always remember the Midhirst Dairy Company employees. j Mr Sladden, as will be seen by advertisement in this issue, has taken Mr A. jH, Palmer into partnership. Both 1 gentlemen are bo well known in the disj trict that we need do no more than 1 . heartily wish the new firm every success. | M,r Sladden's knowledge of the district is ' second to none, and as a surveyor he has had a very wide experience. Dr Valintine objects to the site for abattoirs at Majtei'ton, on account of its proximity to the s septic tank. The Masterton Borough Council have j declined to certify to the petition for nine i o'clock closing on Saturday night, on account of the irregularity of the signatures. At a meeting of the Ngaire Farmers' Union branch last week, a circular was received from Oounake re the formation of a Harbour Katepaytrs' Oefence League. A motion was proposed by Mr Fryday : "That it is time we s r art a Harbour '■ Ratepayers' Defence League with the object of strenuously opposing any further liability being imposed on ratepayers, and generally vo safeguard their interest." Mr Thomas moved an amendment: "That this meeting is averse to any Bill being passed this session, givine power for borrowing money to extend the New Plymouth harbour, until we have more information on tho subject," This was carried by 10 to 5, The muster of volunteers iu town on the occasion of the memorial at St. Mary's to ihe troopers who fell in South Africa will be very large, as it includes all the companies in the district, from Stratford to Okato inclusive. Suoh a display should prove highly attractive to country residents, who would probahly come ii if ' facilities were afforded in the shape of excursion fares and speoial trains.
