A young man who has been conducting an hotel in Westport was arrested there on Saturday night. It is underst iod the charge is one of being concerned in the prer&ature birth of a child by a young woman, formerly a barmaid in his hotel. An inquest on the child will Be held to day.

The members of Parliament who are visiting New Plymouth, visited the Recreation Grounds on Saturday morning, vid the harbour in the afternoon. Those ■\ ho had not seen the harbour before expressed themselves surprised at the accommodation provided, and the com pleteness of the provision for shipping is far as is possible, and considered that the Board had a good claim for power to provide for the extension of the Breaks water. So far the weather has been fine, and the visitors are enjoying their visit. They attended the various churches yesterday, both morning and evening. The Empire Hotel, Wellington, has changed hands, Mr Herman La wis has purchased it, the price, it is said, being £BO,OOO. The furniture and stock is supposed to bring the purchase money up to £IOO,OOO. Mr H. O. Cameron says that Argentine butter was packed in a very similar manner to New Zealand. The factory brand is much the same as ours, and any one going into a merchants store could scarcely tell an Argentine box from a New Zealand box.

A cyclist met with a serious accident 1 on the le Henui Hill on Sunday, through his machine coming in oontaot with a stone. He was conveyed into town, and his iujuries attended to. The County Council meets to-day. On the motion of Mr Samuel, Mr W, L. Fitzherbert was on Friday admitted by Mr Justice Oonolly as a barrister of the Supreme Court. On the application of Mr T. S. Weston, the sitting of the Compensation Court to hear claims against the Hawera Borough Council has been fixed for 26th September, at Hawera. Mr A. E. Bullock was on Friday admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court on the motion of Air T. b. Weston. At a meeting of the Works Committbe on Friday, the following works were authorised : —Making up gutter and pathway opposite Messrs Jenkinson's factory : drainage of water from Shortland street ; repairs to footpath in Gilbert-street, from Liardet-street to Oarrington-road ; ako to whole of footpath in Eliot-street, and the eastern end of Lemon-street. The funeral of the late William Elder took place on Sunday, the remains being followed by a very large numbor of yonng and old, who paid '•heir last respects to one who has been so many years resident) this district, and who has taken his shaae in the troublous times with the natives. The Kev Drew officiated, and made some very appropriate remarks, which were listened to with marked attention, while his earnest appeal to all present made a deep impression.
