SHIPPING CASUALTIES.

THE NIWARU INQUIRY.

PER PRE3S ASSOCIATION,

Napibe, July 28,

The Niwaru inquiry was continued to-day. The evidence of the fist, second, and third officers, the steeasman, and leadsman all corroborated the captain's statements. The pilot, Captain Lake, stated that he was rung up from the signal station at ten minutes to eight and informed that the big steamer was coming in. [ He went out in the pibt boat at 8.15, and first saw the steamer about 8.45, when he burned a blue light as a signal Tte night was hazy. If the captain and officers of the Niwaru said they did not notice any shore lights until the steamer struck hej would believe them, He judged the steamer to be not more than a mile away whon he sighted her, at which time the pilo> boit was about half a mile inside th< bre>kwater. The haze nude it difficult to judge the distance of lights. Provided the captain was sure of hie pisition, it was safe to turn in between the Pania and Auckland reefs. The ligh'housa would be in a much be'tet position for ships' coming in if it was on the Bluff Hill.

E. Pomp, assistant pilot, corroborated Captain Lake. This concluded the evidence, acd counsels' address will be heard tomorrow,

The water in No, 4 hold to-day wagot down so far as to permit of standing on the prop (Her shaft tunnel. Thwork of discharging the damaged earg in this hold will be proceeded wir.n Another piunch mat h being madf, It is anticipated the steamer will be able to leive for Auckland about the end of this week.
