She has be?n brought into the harbour under the lee of the breakwk'er where the cargo in numbar 4 hold wilt be die* charged. Until this is done, it is impossible to tell the extent of the damage, but tho steamer is still making water. The cargo in number 4 hold ie oonsigned to Napier and Wellington. Some persons -who were In the vicinity of the breakwater when the Niwaru was entering the harbour last evening stated that the stetmer oame dangerously close to the breakwater. Blue lights were burned by the har* bourmaster and the steamer veered 0% being subsequently boarded by the pilot. Owing to the rapid rate at which the water rose in No. 4 hold, it was deemed advisable to take the steamer olose ia to shore near the breakwater, where she took ground. There is no w 40 feet of water in the hold. Later. The Niwaru has at present 26 fejt of water in her number 4 hold, but she ia in a good position. Arrangement* have been made for a number of centrifugal pumps which, when placed ia position, will be able to discharge 3000 g.lions per hour. It is believed the whole of the Wellington o*rgo is seriously damaged. A magisterial inquiry will shortly ba held. Wellington, July 20. Three powerful centrifugal pumps? were shipped to Napier this evening for use on the Niwaru Wellington, July 20. The Underwriters Association has received a telegram stating that the Niwaru was fi ling quickly. She had four feat of water iu her hold and to prevent her sinking, she was beaehed. The whole of the Wellington cargo iaeluding spring drapery for the city bouses is reported to be seriously damaged. A contrifugal pump and other anplianoes go noith by the Tarawera today.
