FISCAL UNITY.
Per Press Association. Berlin, July 17. Commenting on the correspondence between Lord Lansdowne and Herr Richthoften, several Berlin papers blame the latter for menacing Great Britain. The organ of Herr Richter, leader of the German People's Party, considers it an unfortunate faux pas, bringing grist only to Mr Chamberlain's mill and calculated to seriously affect Germany's enormously preponderating exports to Britain. The Deutsche Fages Zeitung declares that the correspondence is extremely awkward and shows that Germany abandoned retaliation on Canada, practically asking Britain to close the discussion. MR RITOHIISS VIEWS. OPPOSITION ESSAYS. Received 19, 5.0 p.m. London, July 18. Speaking at the Mansion House, Mr Ritchie said the country was prosperous, and British consols remained, as in the past, the world's pre-eminent security. It was, therefore, for those urging a fiscal change to show that it was necessary or desirable. Sir William Vernon Harcourt, Mr Asquith, Mr Birrell, and otner prominent Liberals are writing fiscal essays which the Eighty Club publishes weekly. GERMANY'* ARTFUL SCHEME. NEED FOR COLONIAL UNITY. WOMEN'B FREE TRADE UNION. Received 19, 6.13 p.m. Berlin, July 18. Herr Richter suggests tnat Germany should conclude special commercial treaties with the colonies whien*grant Britain preference. The German newspapers emphasize the necessity of keeping Biitain off a quarrel, by continuing the favoured nation treatment in order to induce Britain to allow Germany to fight the colonies single handed, since the colonies are unable to adhere to preference, if Britain does not make their quarrel hers. London, July 18. A Women's Free Trade Union has been formed under the presidency of Mrs Herbert Gladstone.
