SNOW IN THE SOUTH.
NARROW BWOAPK! OF RAILWAY COLLISION. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Ashbubton, July li. Snow began to fall this morning, and still continues at noon. Eight to ten incheß has fallen. A collision was narrowly averted at this station on account of a snow storm. The Timaru train, due at 10.30, was half-an-hour late, and arrived as the train from Ohristchurch cams into the station, both trains pulling tip within a couple of yards of flaeh other.' But for the forethought of the sfcationmaster, who sent porters out to warn the drivers of each train, a serious collision might have happened. The signals were obscured by the snow, about a foot ot' wh eb had Won in sis hours, and is gtill falling.' ' Hokitika, July 11.
An exppptionally heavy downpour took place all tho night, and is continuing this morning. The rivers are all in high flood. About forty feet of the southern approach of the Teramikau traffic bridge was washed away. The flood in the Teremakau is tho highest known.
