THE NEW SPEAKER.
Mb A. K. Guinness, who has been elected Speaker of the House of Representative?, was born in Calcutta, in 1846, and arrived in Lyttelton in 1852. He attended the Christchurch College and Grammar School, and commenced to study law in Christchurch. At the age of 21 ba was admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. He then entered into practice at Greymouth. In 1872, Mr Guinness entered politics as a membar of the Provincial Council of Westland, and he held a seat until the abolition of provinces in 1876. Having in the interim acted on several local bodies, be was in 1884 elected to represent Grey in the House of Representatives, and he has represented it ever sit.ee. In 1893 he was appointed Ohsi-man of Committees in successioa to Mr W. L. Rees, and he had held that position contiuuously since then. Mr Guinness is a member of several friendly societies. Mr Guinness is the seventh Speaker of the House of Representatives in the history cf the New Zealand Parliament, the previous Speakers having been Sir Charles Clifford (elected May, 1854), Bir David Muoro (June, 1861), Sir Francis Uillon Bell (August, 1871), Sir William (June, 1876), Sir Maurice O'Rorke (July, 1879), Major, now Sir William Steward (Januaiy, 189!), Sir Maurice O'Rorke (June, 1894). .The best medicine Known Is Bandbr & SiHa" Eucalypti Extract.
