THE ROTCKARE RESERVE.

On the subject cf the Rotokare reserve, Mr Collis, secretary of the Scecery Preservation Society, has received a letter from Mr Daane, Superintendent of ths Tourist Department, in which 'he writer, after thmking Mr Collis for bringing the matter under hia aotice, states tb.it bst week ho siw Mr Robbing, the Mayor of Hawera, to whom te mentioned the question cf tha Reserve leas=i?. Mr Robbing, he says, told hiua that " there was" no special beauty about tha forest in question ; that it was in such a posi'ion .hit its destruction would not mar the general scenic aspect of the district; and that his Council was praotically forced to soil the leases for the purpose of raiding moeey wherewith to pay for improvements which it was necessary should be carried out." In connection with this matter it is doubtful if the leases are legal, as we understand tha Hawera Borough Council has leased the sections bet'oie tha plan of subdivision has been approved, a most impropar and unnecessary thing to do. Se?iag that these leases bring in no revenue to the Borough of Hawera, it is difficult to understand their action in procuring legislation to destroy the scenic value of this reserve.
