WEST COAST BAND CONTEST.
Tbe townspeople of Hawera are taking a keen interest in the forthcoming bind cot-tost proposed to be he'd in that town in the first week in August. A very energe' io executive committee has tern appo nted, and no effort will apparency bj spared to make the contest noj only attractive but successful. Tfce following baeds h v* nominated for taet selection- 1 , quick step march, solo 1 , trio?, at d quartettes :—Hastings Town Btnd, Feiiding Brass Bjnd, Stratford B.ass Bind, Marton Bras 3 Band, Pdlouraton North Municipal Baod, Waitara Brass Bind, Hawera B )icugh Bind, and Dinnevirke Brass ,Band. The contest is intended for secondclass bands only, the idea bjiag to encourage these bands (which fill an impor ant place f oin a musical standpoint) by means of annual competitions to attain greater efficiency, and thereby enhance the pleasure of the public By holding tbe contests in turn at each town from which the binds are drawn will give a decided impe'us to the public throughout tbe district to support and encourage the band-miD, as well lb tending to elevate musical t-sfe and promote its culture. Toe scheme is one which deserves wholehearted support, and in instating such an important movement the oitizens of Hawtra are to be comnaendid for their public spirit aud d< serve t» meet with a thorough success when the con'est is held. It was clearly shown by the result of the Brass Band contest held in New Plymouth thit suoh gatherings hit the pnpu'ar t ste, and there is no reason why, under propsr management, the Hawera fixture, though on a smaller scale, should no 3 be equally popular.
