CRUSADE AGAINST ROUGH PLAY. FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION. Chkistchukch, June 23. The Canterbury Rugby Unicn committee to-night disqualified one eenior and two tbird-c!ass players fir the «st of the season for striking their | opponents in latt Saturday's games. Motions were carried urging the selectors to exclude from the Canterbury 'teams any notoriously rough player, and urging the New Zealand Union to esk the English Union to give the power of reporting rough p,hy to some authorised official other than the referee. TARANAKI rugby UNICW. A meeting of the Management Commit' eo was held at the OouDty Hotel, Stratford, on Friday evening. Present: Messes Buchanan (in the chair), Slattety, Spurdle, Clarke, and Arudt (secretary), The match Star 111. A v. Star 111 B, which had been postpoted on account of a misunderstanding re referees will be played on July 23id. The secretary of the Auckland Rugby Union wrote stating that it was proposed to play Taracaki on September 24th. The secretary will write asking that the match be set down for August 24th cr September 23rd ; or at any rate that the match be made the first in the tour instead of the last letters from the South Taranaki Association and the Waimate and Opunake Clubs re oVjectiog to p'av under Mr O'Connell were received. The Association suggested that the appointment for the next OpuuakeWaimate match ba cancslkd. It was repotted that Hawera and Eltham teams were well satisfied with Mr O'Connell's decisions.
Mr Slattery 83id Walmale would not play in any engagement under this referee. The matter was referred back to the Referees' Association to deal with. The N.Z.R.U. wrote approving byelaws. Thames Union wrote that they were doubtful about visiting Taranaki this season, In answer to Wacganui Union it was decided that the sacretary writa informing them that they owe Taranaki a visit, and the representative team would be unable to visit Wanganui this season. The Otago Union wrote that they would grant 20 per cent of the gate up j to £25 for match at Dunedin.—The I team cannot visit Dunedin on these terms. The reftree notified ordering Wood of Stratford 111. team off the field for using strong language in the match against Tukapa on Thursday. As the p'ayer bad since apologised to tha referee he recommended that no further action be taken.—The latter was received. A letter from the Wairarapa Union atked that Taranaki team visit tint district before end of July. Mr Hopkins, referee in tho mitch Inglewcod v. Tukapa 111., repsrted having ordered Oisen, of Inglewocd, off the field.—Oken to be notified. In the match Tukapi I. v. Inglewood 1., loglewood claimed that Tukapa phyed Jacobs aud McPiko, who were not bsna fide residents in Tukapa's district. Mr Spurdle said Jacobs left Mokau for Waitara on May 21, and could not have bem in New Plymouth for fourteen days before playing. He had come up from the South, but gave oui be was noi going to play, and went away to Mokau. Mr Gray stated that Jacob 3 started work in New Plymouth oa March 16 b last, and went to Mokau about Apiil 6'.h. Jacobs had been told by Dr Heme that he had better not play for some time, so he weat on a hoiid y to Mokau. He contended that his going away on a holiday under oaedicd advise did not make him a non-resident, A letter from Jacobs' employer in New Plymouth corroborated Mr Gray's statement re dates. logle wood's contention was that Jacobs' should have been - back in New Plymouth on the 20th. Mr Arndt eaid there was too much case law, too many fioe points, and not enough foetball in North TaraDaki. A protest against McPike brought out a great deal of strong and contradictory evidence, which, in fairness to McPike, who was not Drtsent, it is deemed advisab'e to withhold until after the i quiry on Friday next, when he will be asKed to att-nd. O ifton I. applied for the match won by Tubapa against them to be awarded to Uliftoa, on the ground tha. O'Dea was not in Tukapa district.
