The Daily News. TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1903. THE EDUCATION BOARD ELECTION.

The annual election of three rasmbsrs of the Education Bxird placa on the £7th Jul/. The thr. e retiring members are Mis Dougher!y Rnd Mi ssrs Faull and Mack . We see no reason why, if these three members offer themselves for ra-cleoticn, they should not be returned, Mrs Dougherty has becin too short a time on the Board to eniblo commute: s t) fairly judge of her abilities as a member, she having been elected to fill a vacancy, so tbas committees may faUy give herj the chance of filling her iw\ term of fcferee year*. Mr Fauil is, we belitve, one of, if not th 3 old :s% member of the Board, and besides having a most intimate knowledge of the Board's business, he is a level hetded, thoroughly practical member. He knows the district from one end to the oth.r, and in bringing bis practical experience to bear on the questions comiog before the Board is absolutely fair and ouN spoken. While Mr Faull carefully safeguards the interests of all Concerned he believes in calling a spade a spade. His retirement would be a great loss to the Board, and the committees would lose a good friend. Mr Faull is also a stickler for law and precedeot, and of en keeps the Board from going astray. Mr Macaray is also an extremely valuable member, and is fairly entitled to be called an educational rxpert. H.j is an M.A., aad has had large experience in the work cf education. His special knowledge and expsrience m>k9 h ; m a most valuable member. In all que3fious relating to the educational syllabus h ; s expert knowledge has proved of enormous advantage to the Board, and a good deal of the success which has attended education in Taranaki(and, we believe, the standard of education here compa*es favourably with any district in the colony) is dua to tha assistanc > hi has given the Board, and the committees ■vill do well to be careful to retain his saiviceß. We m : ght mention also that the three retiring members are admirably situated as rrgards residence—Mrs Djugherly at Eahotu, Mr Faull at Tikoracgi, and Mr Mackay al Midhh>t. It wou'd, we think, ba hard to improve on this condition of things, aad we hope to see the retiring mambsrs returned unopposed. j
