FIRES.
PUB FBXSB ASSOCIATION. Wellington, June 14, A fire occurred about 10 o'clock this morning in the Union Steamship Company's offices, a two-storied building at the corner of Customs House Quay and Johnston-street. It appears to have started in the room used by the Board when in Wellington, and to have spread to the correspondence room adjoining. Both these rooms were considerably damaged by fire water, the manager's rcom being damaged by smoke. The progress of the fire was checked by the fire-proof doors, but the main portion lof the building has been a good deal ! injured by smoke. The total damage lis roughly estimated at .£IOOO. A [quantity cf marine stores, stationery, and other stuck kept on the upper floor practically escaped. Insurances areßuilding £4OOO, distributed as follows: New Zealand £750, Sun £3OO, National £750, Commercial Union £SOO, Standard £IOOO, South British £7OO. Stock £SOOO, as follows New Zealand £1250, Sun £2OO, National £250, London acd Lancashire £IOOO, Royal Exchange £SOO, Royal £IOOO, I South British £3OO. The fire is supposed to have been caused through the bursting of a kerosene stove.
