FARMERS' UNION CONFERENCE.
PROPOSAL TO ENTERTAIN DELEGATES. At the close cf the meeting on Saturday, at which tha presentation to Mr and Mrs Uulke took place, the Mayor (Mr R Cjck) invited the townspeople present to remaia behind to consider tbe question of entertaining the dele-" iates who will be present at tha Farmers' Union Conference to ba heH at New Plymouth on Thursday and bVilay next. I His Worship explained that he -re-1 cognised the importance of the Farmers' | Union, and that it seemed to him desirable that the town thould take the same course as was the custom in other places where the Conference mat, and extend to the delegate o , no"; oDly a hearty welcome, but also to entertain them in some fitting way to be decided upon. He pointed out that there should be no qusstion of pirfcy politics or town v. cauntry, but the town interests were so closely identified with those of the couatry settlers nnd vice versa, that it would be a good oppor'uaity for cementing their community of interest, and, at the same time, showing the delegates a c jurtesy which he had no doubt would be fully appreciated. The suggestion was coidially taken up, and the followirg committee was formed (with power to add to their number) to further the pnject:—The Mayor, Messrs Govett, N, King, Brooking, Wood, Courtney, J. C. George, Samuel, Paul, Lenroa, Quilliam, Standish, Webster, and Kerr.
It was arranged to call a meeting at the Council Chamber to-day (Monday) at 4 p.m. to further consider the matter, and it is hoped that as many townspeop'e, as can possibly do will make it convenient to attini.
