NEW GUINEA.
PROPOSAL TO SECURE OOMIBOU KB PRIM MSOOUTXOV. Received 12,10.28 p m Melbodbhi, Jane 13. la the House. Mr Kerwan mired that the Govern meat should urge the Iroptrul Goverrment to secure by txchange of territory, or other petoefal meins, the control of the whole of New Guinea. He bdieved it might be arranged for both Germany and Holland, or either of (hem to surrender their territory for a satisfactory compineation. There was no doubt whatever that this vast territory could be bettor devtlopsd under British than by foreign rule, but he had no suggestion to make as to what territory should bj exchanged. Sit E. "Barton hoped the motion would not hi pressed. Confidential correepsndence had recently passed with the Imperial Government, and if that could be disclosed it would show that Australian interests bad baen carefully conserved. He regretted that the Imperial Ministers of thi time had not realised the impo.-tanoe of the Australian demand fo- the complete annexation of New Guinei. On the strength of this explanation Mr Kerwan withdrew his motion.
