Ths condition of the building as a whole waa repotted as unsatisfactory. On the application of Mr Quilliatn, of Govc-tt and Qiiliiam, the liciiwa of the Waitara and Misonic Hotel?, Wnitara, were renewed. I On the application if Mr Weston, of Weston and Wistcm, tha license of the B idge Hotel, Waitara, and the Railway Ho'e l , Inglgwood, were renewed ; i and a publican's license instead of an .accommodation license granted to the j Urenui Hotel, the license f<;e being raised faom£ls to .£23 per annum. George Calvert applied for an accommodation license for his hiuse at Strathm r*. M> Spsnc->, with Mr Mcj Oarthy, appeared in of the application. Mr HaMwell appeared on beh If of the petitioners opposing the granting of ths 1 ense. Ryan, for the polio', objected to the issue of a license. The pol'ce repsrt eta'ed that the license was not required, and also that Strathm~re was not very far from the prohibited area. ; Mr Spence asked first of all that the Committee would decide the mode of proceedure in dealing with the application of bis client (Culvert) and the Whenuakura application. ! Mr Welsh objected to the Bench dealing with the Whanuakura license until the S r.ithmore and momona licenses bad been dealt with | Mr Spence bad no locus standi in referring to the Whsnuakura license, j Mr Spence maintained that it was nece : sary to have the Whenunkura license cleared away before dealing with j the Strathmore license. The Commit! ee th-.n re'ired to discuss the order in which the applications should be taken.

On resumiugthe Bsnch the S.M. reported that tbe Committee had decided to take the Wheouakura license fist. Itwastohava been dealt with in the morning, but was allowed to stand down until the affernoon. Properly, thoy should deal with the Whanuakura licerse before deiliog with either Oalgher or Oilverl's application. If the Whenuakura license lapsed the Committee would have a fr e hand to either grant or refuse either the S r.ithmore or Whangamomona applications. Mr Welsh accepted the ruling of the Committee under proves l- , and withdrew the application for the Whenuakura license.

Taking the Strathmore license Mr Spence objected to the petition lodged against the granting of same on tbe ground that there was no statement that all the signatories to the petition were ovar the age of 21 years.

Mr Halliveil said the form of the pe'ition was the exact form prescribed by Act. He therefore contended that the statement in section 58 quoted by Mr Spence was not mandatory. His Worship would not hald that the clau e was not mandatory, would not say that Mr Halliwe'l had not complied with the law—he thought he had.

1 Mr Spence said that in another petition Mr Halliwell hid recognised tbe necessity for s'ating that all siguatoi iea were ov. r 21 years of age. The teim adult) did not necessarily mean that an adult perfon was over 21 years old. Adult meant a grown-up parson, Speaking to the Commissioner His Worship said that he considered the memorial sufficient. The Commissioner decided to accept the petition. j Dealing with the petition in support of granting the license Mr Halliwell objected to the petition being received. The law did not provide for accepting a petition in support of a license. Mr Speucs agreed to .".ccep'; fho ruling of the Beach that tha petition was out of order. He then prepared to open his c>ee for the applicmt, emphasising the nec-'Stity lor the establishing of a license at Straihmoiv, j pointing to tbe increas) of population, I etc. He cilled Geo Cilvoit, accom- ' mcdatiou housekeeper ani s'< rekeeper. Examined by Mr McCarthy, witness slid S'ratbmore was 20| milos from S ratford. The nearest public house ■«us 14 miles away at Toki>. (Plans and photograph of the Strathmore Houso were produced.) At the Marsden Licensing meeting I the application for the Grabamstown accommodation licenso was withdrawn, and the Njunguru Hotel accommodation licenso application was adjourned till 26th instant to permit an application being made in another name than that of Angalo, the present hcsnfee. All o:her applications were granted, Donedin, June 4. Mr E. H. Oarew, S.M., who was recently appointed chairman of ths Licensing Committee, sat as the licensing bench to-day and granted a transfer of a license from one applicant to another. An application was then made for the renewal of the license for the Provincial Hotel. Mr Oarew said the returning officer had reported to him that prohibition had bean carried in the district. That beirg so, ho could not entertain the application for a liC3DBf,

Mr Plattß recounted the steps taken in connection with the petition, and said that application had been made to take the matter to the Privy Council, and as that application was pending it was the proper thing, looking at the interest of the parties and the convergence of the public, that the Committee, at its discretion, should adjourn the meeting till the nutter was decided. Mr Carew said be had decided to decline to deal with any application, and that placed Mr Platts in a better position tbaa if he dealt with it, as he could apply for a mandamus.

At the meeting of the Waikouaiti Committee to-day, reduction having been carried giving the Committee power to close four hotel?, the applications for licenses for the Palmergton and Evacsdale Hottk were refused.
